Riddle of the Ring (board/wargame)
Published by Fellowship Games, originally circa 1977
Review by Mike
ICE's Riddle of the Ring is a very popular and sought after game by
many wargamers and players. On auction sites, ebay, etc the game can
fetch quite a high price. However, few know that their was a Riddle of
the Ring game made back in 1982 and not by Iron Crown Enterprises, but
by Fellowship Games, INC.
I have gotten some news that this game was being sold at Gencon 1983
by the creators of the game. Apparently a few hundred (estimate?) were
sold. If a few hundred were sold, were are all the copies? Besides our
site, there are no other sites that give any information about this
game and it rarely shows up for sale on ebay.
From my own personal copies, I have never seen a 1977 version
however the map board does state 1977, 1982. 1977 may be the date the
game was conceived but not yet released for sale until 1982. If anyone
can provide any extra info, please let me know.
Gencon 2004, a copy of Fellowship Games Riddle of the Ring sold for $325. Not sure of the condition or which version.
As far as I know, there are four versions of Riddle of the Ring by Fellowship Games, INC.
1st version: Map board says 1977, 1982. Pieces are small plastic rings. Backing to hold game is thin poster board.
2nd version: Map board says 1982. Board has copyright rules stating that the game is not related to Professor Tolkiens work. The copyright rules is not printed on the board like the 1983 versions but instead a piece of small paper glued to it. Back to hold the game is thin poster board.
3rd version: Map board says 1983. Pieces are small plastic rings. Board has copyright rules stating that the game is not related to Professor Tolkiens work. Backing to hold the game is sturdy cardboard.
4th version: Map board says 1983. Pieces are small stones. Board has copyright rules stating that the game is not related to Professor Tolkiens work. Backing to hold the game is sturdy cardboard.
